For six to seven thousand years, silver has been valued for its beauty and usefulness. Silver is not only used in jewelry - it is also used for its ability to conduct heat and electricity and, since it is very reflective of light, is used in most mirrors. It is also able to be pounded into thin sheets and formed into wire.
Silver is a very precious metal due to how rare it is. Only 0.0001% of the earths crust is made of silver. It is the most commonly found in the mineral argentite. Most silver produced is a byproduct of mining operations in North America, Russia, and Australia for copper and lead.
Although most people associate silver with jewelry, 30% of silver is actually used in photography. It is also used in electrical components and mirrors and fillings for tooth cavities.
